- 2 (28 ounce) cans whole tomatoes (with juices)
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1 medium onion, chopped
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 teaspoons italian seasoning
- 2 teaspoons dried oregano
- 1 teaspoon granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (optional)
- 1 handful fresh basil, chopped
- pepper to taste
Instructions
- Break the whole tomatoes in a large bowl using your hands and add the juices.
- In a soup pot or Dutch oven, heat the olive oil, butter, and onions over medium heat for about 5-7 minutes until softened.
- Add the minced garlic and cook for an additional 30 seconds.
- Incorporate the tomatoes, Italian seasoning, oregano, sugar, salt, and red pepper flakes. Stir well and once bubbling, cover loosely.
- Reduce heat and let simmer for 30 minutes, maintaining a slight bubble with the lid cracked.
- Stir in the fresh basil, taste, and adjust seasoning with additional salt and pepper if needed.
Notes
Feel free to adjust the level of crushed red pepper flakes for desired spiciness.
