Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1 pound flank steak, sliced into 1/4 inch strips
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 head broccoli, chopped into even sized florets
  • 1 large bell pepper, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 1/2 cup beef broth
  • 3 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon fish sauce
  • 1 tablespoon white vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons chili paste
  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch or 1/2 teaspoon xanthan gum

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Hunan sauce by whisking together sesame oil, beef broth, soy sauce, fish sauce, white vinegar, brown sugar, chili paste, and cornstarch in a small bowl. Set this mixture aside.
  2. Heat vegetable oil in a non-stick pan over medium heat. Once hot, add the beef strips and cook for 4-5 minutes until browned. Remove the beef from the pan.
  3. In the same pan, add the chopped vegetables and sauté for 2-3 minutes until they become tender.
  4. Return the cooked beef to the pan and pour the Hunan sauce over everything. Stir and cook for an additional 4-5 minutes until the sauce thickens.
  5. Remove the pan from heat and serve immediately.

Notes

For extra flavor, marinate the beef in soy sauce for 30 minutes before cooking.
Feel free to mix in additional vegetables like carrots or snap peas for added nutrition.
Adjust the chili paste according to your spice preference.
