Description

This French Toast Casserole is a delightful blend of creamy eggs, rich milk, and hearty bread, making it a perfect choice for breakfast gatherings. Easy to prepare, it’s packed with flavor and topped with optional berries or whipped cream for an extra treat!

Ingredients

Scale
  • cooking spray
  • 2 tablespoons butter, melted
  • 8 ounces french bread, cut into ¾-inch cubes (about 8 cups)
  • 1 ½ cups milk of choice
  • 4 large eggs
  • 2 tablespoons pure maple syrup
  • 2 tablespoons + 1 teaspoon brown sugar, divided
  • 1 ½ teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • 1 ½ teaspoons ground cinnamon, divided
  • pinch of ground nutmeg
  • optional for topping: berries, whipped cream, yogurt, powdered sugar, and/or maple syrup

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F.
  2. Mist a 9×9-inch baking dish with cooking spray. Add the melted butter and swirl to coat evenly.
  3. Place the bread cubes into the prepared baking dish.
  4. In a medium bowl, mix together milk, eggs, maple syrup, 2 tablespoons of brown sugar, vanilla extract, 1¼ teaspoons of cinnamon, and nutmeg. Whisk until combined, then pour over the bread cubes.
  5. Using a spoon or spatula, press the bread cubes down to ensure they are coated and submerged in the egg mixture.
  6. In a small bowl, mix the remaining 1 teaspoon of brown sugar and ¼ teaspoon of cinnamon. Sprinkle it evenly over the bread mixture.
  7. Bake for 45-50 minutes or until the casserole is set in the center.
  8. Serve warm with optional toppings like berries, whipped cream, yogurt, powdered sugar, or maple syrup.

Notes

For extra flavor, let the mixture sit for 30 minutes before baking to allow the bread to soak up the egg custard.
Feel free to experiment with different types of bread for added taste.
This dish can be made ahead of time and baked the next morning for convenience.
